New Trick
It’s been a while! Last week was recovery from C’s 1st birthday party. He made such a mess of his cake that it took no fewer than 5 people to clean it up! My husband made a tasty taco buffet (I think I got fourths…), my mom inflated about a dozen balloons in around 5 minutes, my dad brought his dog inside after only 4 minutes of leaving him in the car, only 3 kids cried, there were 2 kinds of cake my husband baked, and 1 very messy birthday boy.
Recently, C learned how to look at us upside down, through is legs. He’ll do this position in his Dock-a-Tot and tap his knees, too. Dunno why he prefers tapping on things with his middle finger, but at least he’s stopped pointing with it!
He keeps learning unexpected things in a very unpredictable time, like he doesn’t want to eat solid foods (he sucks on pasta sauce and spits out the noodle), but he starts walking at 8.5 months old; he hasn’t said his first word yet, but he babbles from the back of his throat and enjoys saying “gka gka” so it sounds like he’s calling us all “poop” in Spanish (even though I’ve been trying to teach him Mandarin).
It’s hard when I don’t know when C will achieve a CDC Milestone, especially when those milestones are being surpassed by other peers of his. But then I think, “Why is the Center for Disease Control coming up with childhood milestones?” and I remember that they changed the list a couple of years ago anyhow, due to Covid (!); and that generations of moms didn’t have that list at all—Moses didn’t bring a milestone list down from Mt.Sinai, so I shouldn’t put so much weight in it. I have to work on doing my best (but not relying on myself, rather on God—easier said), pray for my son, and appreciate how unique he is in what he is learning, like turning the pages of his books, being really interested in looking at the letters on his wall and on the quilt our friend made for him, and touching the sunlight shining on the floor.
